The plant is an erect, much branched subshrub, 30–60 cm tall with hairy stems and simple, opposite, green leaves that are strongly scented. Leaves have petioles, and are ovate, up to 5 cm long, usually slightly toothed. The flowers are purplish in elongate racemes in close whorls. The two main morphotypes cultivated in India and Nepal are green-leaved and purple-leaved.
Many Hindus have tulsi plants growing in front of or near their home, often in special pots or special small masonry structures. Traditionally, Tulsi is planted in the center of the central courtyard of Hindu houses.
Uses:
Leaf-juice is given in fever.
*Roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds are used in gonorrhoea, dysentery, diarrhoea and croup. Plant is stomachic, anthelmintic, expectorant, carminative, antipyretic, stimulant and pectoral. Leaf-juice is useful in throat complaints, earache and ringworms. Roots, leaves and bark are cyanogenetic. Seeds are demulcent, stimulant, diaphoretic and used in habitual constipation and piles and in poultice for sores and sinuses.

Great information Subhash....It would be nice if you can upload a dictionary or explain in plain words so that lay people can understand words like ''anthelmintic, carminative, pectoral, cyanogenetic, ......." without having to look them up everytime! And I was wondering if there are some myths or stories behind these herbs...it would be interesting to hear....
